ARTIST'S PROFILE
Kathryn learned the art of lapidary at an early age and went on to work for several jewelers. She studied sculpture at Emily Carr College of Art in Vancouver B.C. She now resides in Armstrong, a quaint rural community in the Okanagan Valley where she operates a lapidary/stained glass design studio called A Stone’s Throw.
Her work reflects her interest in the healing aspects of gemstones and color therapy. Crystal wands, rune stones, pendulums, chakra jewelry and stained glass featuring stone inlays are some of the products created there. Chakra meditation mandalas rendered in stained glass and Starstone (custom astrology necklaces), the ultimate in birthstone jewelry are the latest in her line of metaphysical tools. Ancient symbolism, color, vibration and the natural beauty of gemstones will continue to serve as a source of inspiration and creativity for this versatile and talented artist.
THE MAKING OF A ROCKHOUNDEight year old Kathryn was asked by Johnny Pit (a prospector and family friend) to sell amethyst from his local mine in Thunderbay. Armed with a large sign proclaiming “AMYTHEST” she set up a table in outside of her grandmother’s restaurant. Many tourists stopped by to inform the little girl of her spelling mistake and in the process purchased and traded rocks with her.
It was a summer of learning and excitement as she shared her new treasures with her granny. Soon rocks were replacing candy bars in the glass case by the till. From restaurant to rockshop in one summer, this was the beginning of a life long love of rock and gems for the whole family.
